Why Your Google Business Profile Is Your Most Underrated Marketing Asset

In News by John Gray

If you run a local business and you’re not actively managing your Google Business Profile, you’re leaving money on the table. Not slightly – significantly.

Most business owners set it up once, forget about it, and assume Google will do the rest. It won’t. And while you’re waiting, your competitors are showing up in the places you’re not.

Here’s why your Google Business Profile (GBP) deserves far more attention – and what you can do about it.

First, what actually is a Google Business Profile?

It’s the box that appears on the right-hand side of Google when someone searches for your business by name. It’s also what powers the local “3-pack” – those three businesses that show up in map results when someone searches for something like “IT support Surrey” or “accountant Guildford.”

That 3-pack is prime real estate. And unlike paid ads, it doesn’t cost you per click.

Why most businesses are getting it wrong

The most common mistake is treating GBP like a directory listing – fill in your name, address, and phone number, and job done.

But Google is watching everything. It’s looking at:

  • How recently you updated your profile
  • Whether you’re posting regularly
  • How many reviews you have – and how you respond to them
  • Whether your photos are up to date
  • If your business information is consistent across the web

An abandoned profile sends a signal to Google that you’re not that active. And Google doesn’t tend to reward inactive businesses with top rankings.

The local 3-pack changes everything

When someone in your area searches for the service you offer, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top – before any websites, before any ads. Those three spots get the lion’s share of clicks.

Getting into that 3-pack isn’t luck. It’s the result of consistent, deliberate activity on your profile over time. Businesses that post regularly, respond to reviews promptly, and keep their information accurate are the ones Google trusts – and trust translates directly into rankings.

For a local SME, a single additional enquiry per week from GBP could easily be worth thousands over the course of a year. It’s not a small thing.

What an optimised GBP actually looks like

Example of an optimised Google Business Profile

Here’s what separates a profile that performs from one that sits there doing nothing:

  • A well-written business description that includes your key services and location signals
  • The right categories selected (primary and secondary)
  • Regular GBP posts – at least weekly – that mirror what you’d share elsewhere
  • Consistent responses to every review, positive or negative
  • Fresh photos that show your team, your premises, your work
  • Q&A section populated with real questions and answers
  • Products or services listed with pricing where possible

None of this is complicated. But it does need to be done consistently – which is exactly why most businesses don’t do it.

Reviews matter more than you think

Google reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals going. But it’s not just about volume – it’s about recency and response rate.

A business with 12 reviews and no responses will typically rank lower than a business with 20 reviews and a consistent pattern of replies. Responding to reviews – even just briefly – tells Google you’re an active, engaged business.

It also tells potential customers. People read how you respond to complaints just as much as they read the complaints themselves.

This isn’t optional marketing – it’s infrastructure

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a potential customer sees before they ever visit your website. It’s your first impression, your credibility check, and your local SEO engine – all in one.

Treating it as an afterthought is the equivalent of having a scruffy shopfront and wondering why footfall is down.

The businesses showing up in the local 3-pack aren’t there by accident. They’re there because they’ve put in the work – or they’ve had someone do it properly on their behalf.
